i not sTupid tOo -reflection paper-

The movie was great! Actually it’s my second time watching the film. It is touching, light-hearted but also serious to some extent. It brought a bunch of eye-opening to me about understanding teenagers.

What teenagers like me need most is to be understood and be respected. Money and material things cannot fill the emptiness and longings in our hearts. We want to be understood and listen to. We want our thoughts to be heard and not just being nagged and scolded. We wish to have the chance to speak up and defend ourselves… we wish to be given the benefit of the doubt for all the issues against us.

We are in the stage where we feel stifled with our environment and always feel pressured with the expectations of our parents. We want to open various things to our parents but the lack of opportunity because of their busy schedule is a big problem. We have many questions in our minds… questions which we do not know the answers. All we can easily approach are our friends. Well, I am happy and thankful because I have wonderful friends. I cannot say that my parents are lacking time on me but there are still a lot of things that I cannot easily open to them… things which I prefer to open up with my friends.

We, teenagers are very much sensitive and emotional. We are still in the stage in getting to know who we really are. We are still shaping our identity and searching our place in the world. We want to love and be loved in return. We want to have the attention of the people who we value most.

I also reflected that praising people around us is very essential. We should not see their vices but rather concentrate on the good side. We should not judge others according to the bad things they have done but instead with the good things they are up to. Like the film ask in the beginning – when was the last time you praised someone? I think it is about time to start once more.

It is true that the children do things that they learn from adults closest to them – parents. And it is important that parents start to change the way they bring up their kids. As what a line in the movie says, “Parents are the role model to their children. Bad family bred bad children.” This implies that it is the responsibility of the parents to guide and discipline their kids. What the parents do will greatly affect what kind of children their sons and daughters will be. A big part of us comes from them.  We somehow acquire their character, virtues and principles. Some of us also choose to imitate our parents most especially if we idolized them. We lived each day trying to succeed and meet their expectations.

I also learned about appreciating the little things our parents are giving or showing to us. A simple thank you has a big impact on our parents. I believe our parents also want us to show to them that we love them… that we somehow give importance to all their sacrifices for our welfare. We should always follow them because no parents will put their kids to bad situations. No parents will allow their kids to be harmed.

It is time for us to be closer to our parents as well as our parents to be closer to us. A quality time with our family is essential. It molds us to become better persons.
